Elderberry is used for “the flu” (influenza), colds, sinus pain, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), nasal and chest congestion (diminish swelling in mucous membranes like sinuses and help relieve nasal congestion), and tonsillitis. (Bioflavonoids and other proteins in the juice destroy the ability of cold and flu viruses to infect a cell.) Elderberry’s powerful effects in boosting the immune system, has made it a popular choice to combat bacterial and viral infections.
It is also used for back and leg pain (sciatica), nerve pain (neuralgia), yeast infections, asthma, diabetes, and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), due to its enhancement of the individual’s immune system.
Some people use elderberry as a laxative for constipation, to increase urine flow, and to cause sweating. Known for its powerful antioxidant activity, Elderberry is used to protect cells against damage and in lowering cholesterol, improving vision, and improving heart health.
Astragalus root has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. It is a powerful adaptogenic herb (which is meant to increase general resistance to stress and disease, by normalizing disturbances in your body’s ability to balance, by stimulating the immune system during conditions such as the common cold, blood disorders, and viral invasion.
Astragalus boosts energy levels adding to overall feeling of “wellbeing”, along with its anti-aging benefits. Recent documented research has found the possibility that Astragalus can protect DNA and increase longevity. Studies have shown that Astragalus may protect the telomeres from degradation. Astragalus can help activate an enzyme called telomerase (hTERT) which stimulates the production of additional telomeres.*
Some doctors recommend that pregnant and breastfeeding women avoid eating elderberries.
*Telomeres are attached to the end of chromosomes. During the DNA replication process, telomeres keep the DNA together (like how the plastic caps on the end of shoelaces keep them from unraveling). Every time DNA replicates, the telomeres get slightly shorter and eventually when they get small enough, the process of cell death begins.
